Industrial research is a research-and-development function of an organization. The primary aim of industrial research is to develop or improve products and processes, and ICT and media are no exception. IT can be applied to almost every area of industry; telecommunications is used in tracking livestock, manufacturing company stock quotes are delivered instantly through software programs and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags enable many supply chain management tasks. Many types of organisations carry out industrial research on ICTs in one form or another; however, it is not limited to businesses that produce tangible goods. For example, non-profit organizations often conduct market surveys using ICTs when researching ways to improve social welfare.
